Life Coaching – An Introduction To The Revolution In Personal Improvement

Life Coaching - An Introduction To The Revolution In Personal Improvement

Life coaching arrived in the UK around 10 years ago, having started in the United States some 10 years earlier. The idea of life coaching is to define goals and work out how you can achieve them. Whereas therapy analyses the past, with life coaching the emphasis is on the future and how the client can fulfil their potential.

A life coach will not judge their clients but work with them on issues causing difficulties in their life. They will help the client understand problems, see what may be holding them back, work out solutions, set goals and concentrate on ways to change for the better. Life coaching will usually involve a series of regular sessions over several months and contact with your coach can be by telephone, email or personal visit.

Life coaches will have different styles and use a variety of methods in their work, depending on the needs of their client. Many will use experience gained in disciplines such as sociology, psychology, career or other forms of counselling. However, life coaching is not intended for those with psychological illness.

Individual clients come from all sorts of backgrounds and maybe looking for anything from major life changes to a few small adjustments to put them back on track. Although clients are often individuals, many companies also use life coaches to work with their employees in house. Improving motivation, developing leadership and teambuilding skills, or managing working relationships could be some of the areas covered.

How can life coaching help me?

If you are at a transition point in your personal or professional life then coaching can give you the confidence to set priorities, take decisions and make changes which will ultimately help you achieve a happier life. It is all about taking charge of your life and getting the results you want, rather than drifting and allowing things to happen around you.

In your working life perhaps you would like to improve your career opportunities, achieve more or develop your skills, but you are not sure how. Alternatively perhaps you would like to become self-employed, or simply need a change. A new challenge can give you a sense of purpose but you may lack the confidence to proceed. Life coaching will help you understand and accept your weaknesses, but also enable you to believe in yourself and make the most of your strengths and abilities.

In your personal life you may feel you need or want to change your lifestyle. Perhaps you would like to lose weight, improve your health and fitness, manage stress or gain a better work/life balance. While you may well know what you should be doing, actually keeping up lifestyle changes is difficult at times. Coaching can help you identify exactly why you want to change, why earlier attempts may have faltered, and to view the process in a more positive way. Crucially the targets you set will be realistic so that your motivation and the benefits of change can be maintained.

Good relationships with those around you are very important to your sense of well being and satisfaction with life, but relationships can be difficult both at home and at work. However, this can improve with the help of coaching sessions. Talking through the issues will enable you to see how you can change to help resolve problems.

How can I find a life coach?

There is no professional body or any regulation in the Life Coaching industry. In theory anyone can set themselves up as a life coach with no formal training or experience. There are training courses available but no recognised qualifications. Therefore your own research and instinct will be the most important factors when looking for a life coach. The media, particularly the internet, and personal recommendation are likely to be your best sources of information.

Your choice of life coach will partly depend on your purpose. If you are looking for assistance with a particular area of your life, then you will want to research the experience and skill available in that area. For example, some coaches may be more effective working on family issues than changes at work. However, you may feel that personality and how the coach clicks with you are more important than any particular background. The way the coach asks questions, delivers constructive criticism and motivates their client is of course going to be vital to the success of the sessions. Also remember to consider whether you would like the option of face to face contact with your coach.

A good life coach will not ask for a large payment upfront. After the initial introductory conversation you should be allowed time so that you can be reasonably sure you have made the right choice. This works both ways as the coach will also want to be sure you will have a successful working partnership.

Can I become a life coach?

As a life coach you will need excellent communication and listening skills, a positive approach and the ability to encourage and motivate others. You must obviously enjoy working closely with people and also be flexible. More specific skills may be required if you choose to work in a particular area of life coaching.

Although there are currently no qualification requirements, you may well choose to undertake some form of training course before you start to practice life coaching. Training will develop your skills and is likely to give you more confidence and credibility. As there are no academic standards you will have to rely on your own research and evaluation to find an appropriate course. Your choice will depend on previous experience, and personal interest. Remember to ask about the cost of the course, time involved, support available and recommendations from previous students.

  1. Thanks, Dave! it’s really hard to find a video, that can teach you somthing…

  2. You’re welcome. As I said, they are not lessons, just tips on improvement. Take them or reject them at will. I’m glad you found something useful. That’s what makes it worth posting. Good luck to you!

write your boss a letter, keep a copy.

Try to imporove your behavior, too. If you can change the things that your boss is asking you to do, then fix them. If not, then write in your letter why you can not.

Eventually you will get fired, and you may want to get unemployment benefits until you get a new job. Then you will show the judge (yes, you will go to court to fight for unemployment benefits) and you will show this letter saying that you are doing the best you can. Good luck!

  5. The funny thing is, I’m actually right-handed. But since I’m self-taught, I always visualized the drums descending like a guitar fret-board or piano keyboard–with the high notes on the right descending to the left. That’s why I initially set it up lefty. So technically speaking, I guess all those ‘righty’ drummers out there, are the ones who are playing backwards!

My best 5k in high school was around 17:30, and now I'm running as a freshman in college. My time in high school was OK, but not great. You'll be a sophomore this year. I tended to improve almost a minute a year in high school until my senior year, ad I started about the same level as you, so I would shoot for about 18:15 to 18:30 in August.

For a summer training plan. Run 6 days a week, and go for about 40 to 50 miles a week. That comes to something like 7 or 8 a day. I would alternate 3 days of easy, fairly long runs with 2 days of tempo runs and one day of a longer, fairly easy run, about 10 miles or so on the long day. Then take the 7th day off. That's what I would work up to. At the start of the summer, do about 30-35 miles a week and adjust the mileage accordingly, then build up to the longer distance. Around the beginning of August, replace one of the tempo runs with a track workout to start really working on speed.

    Good Luck in the fall!

That sounds like a lot of crap you shouldn't be putting up with. First of all, she's not a friend. Period. Even if she's telling the truth about not being after you boyfriend (which she's probably not), she's still not a good friend to you anyway. You need to leave her before things get even worse.

Also, you may want to have a sit down talk with your boyfriend. He should have put a stop to things a long time ago. Ask him to put some distance between them until you destress. If he refuses, he may not even be worth it, either.

Can you help me with my question? It has to do with not-so-friendly friends, too. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080803153223AAgs6kS

  8. Good point. Everyone does have their own preferred sound. And you do use a tight batter head also–giving a crisp attack–which was my point. Personally, I prefer a quick attack and quick decay, so there’s no ‘muddy’ carry-over in sound if I get busy. (Which I’m prone to do!) But here I’m just trying to highlight the pros of PRACTICING with a crisp snare (just like using a pad), to avoid the cons of developing any lazy habits. Thanks for watching and offering valid criticism. Good luck to you.

  9. Home Jobs US says:

yes yes practicing dry is good to hear your imperfections so you can pick up minor flubs or things like not playin your doubles evenly

  10. Anonymous says:

understand your point but i disagree. while you can hear definition better with a tight snare and head, i prefer a tight head with a very loose snare. the sound is what i like, not for cheating. a snare to tight sounds dry and unappealing to me. bonham had loose snare.

Freely I received from others, so freely I give, right? It’s only fair. Watched your video again. GREAT chops and a really great feel for soloing to a crowd. Well done! Go check her out folks.

  12. Great video Dave – A lot of good info here.
OH no – I just found out that I’m the biggest cheater! :)

Is it too late to change?

I guess that’s why I don’t have any instructional videos! Yours are really good

    Thanks

  13. Thanks, Joe! I just re-checked your videos, to make sure you were kidding. You’re not cheating. Your snare is tight and crisp, and so is your playing! (He has GREAT videos, folks! Go check them out, NOW!) I guess I WAS a bit judgemental in that part of the video. Everyone has their own personal preferences to snare sound, of course. A tight snare makes it easier to hear your flaws, is all. This is the second time I got into trouble over that issue! I’ll have to do 300 paradiddles as penance!

…..A comnment? Sure. What participants were supposed to "get" is that the culture is "all BS" and you need to "get in touch with your feelings" and "step outside the box."

From the 21st century, all this sounds pretty lame. Back then, I thought it was pretty lame, definitely not worth the price of admission and going through the BS of est. But to people who were all caught up in pleasing others, this was pretty liberating stuff.

Two of the best training programs you could find, are right there in your area. The SF SPCA at http://www.sfspca.org, and the Marin Humane Society at http://www.marinhumanesociety.org Both group classes are very reasonably priced for the quality of training you get.

Also Jean Donaldson, director of traiing and behavior at SF SPCA runs a dog training academey, a rigorous program often described as the Harvard of dog training. I have met many of her students are they are well versed and really skilled. You can find her certified graduates on the spca site mentioned above and there are lots to choose from in the SF Area.

For some immediate tips try out at http://www.pawstitiveexperience.com and go to my training tips page. Check out "jumping",, "polite greetings", "people empowerment program", restrained recall, "off leash recall, and loose leash walking" There are 45 tip there and I will be loading 5 more this next week. One will be on leadership and taking personal space. You can find the article and video at http://www.kohd.com then scroll to Khody's Tail Waggin Tips. The full two part series on leadership will be available on 3/2. Part one is there now with the full article but part two talks about taking personal space.
Part two airs tonight on our local news program and after that it gets added to the website.

i am not sure on how to go about doing podcasts but it does sound like a good idea. here are some other thoughts:

-email newsletter with content your current and potential clients would be interested in
-talk with local community collages about teaching a class for them as your students can also become your clients
-word of mouth as this is likely to be your best source of clients so get your clients to tell their friends and colleagues. you can use an incentive like a small dollar gift card as a thank you.

  27. The Government presents it's self to be the "Ethical One" however we all know different.. They are mainly lawyers remember..They have created a self serving system of ethics.. If you work for them and tell on them you are in trouble.. It is better renamed control..

Also hit up a football camp. Syracuse Orange hold one every year in the summer they have coach from the Big East show up and tell you what they are looking for. With your location your in the middle of some high class school Pitt, BC, UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse so get your tapes out to schools close by get your name out there.
